Comment on investment proposals for Yorkshire and the north made by Deputy Prime Minister

The Leader of Leeds City Council Councillor Keith Wakefield has made the following comment in response to today's announcement on investment in Yorkshire and the north by the Deputy Prime Minister.

Leader of Leeds City Council Councillor Keith Wakefield said:

“This proposed investment in the north in terms of transport improvements, skills and tourism is welcome but as with the other recent announcements it needs to happen as quickly as possible so early action is essential. The continued austerity measures and the severe cuts to funding cities like Leeds have taken are putting people into real hardship, so this announcement needs to be the start of much more significant changes in order to make a real difference.

“All parties now recognise the north is long overdue being given proper investment and resources. Together with devolved fiscal responsibilities and decision-making powers that is the key to unlocking its immense economic potential and improving the lives of millions of people.”
