Applications now open for secondary school places

Parents across Leeds are being reminded to get their applications in for their child’s secondary school place for next September.

Although it is only early in the summer holidays, families with children starting secondary school in September 2015 can already start applying for their child’s school place.

Parents and carers are being encouraged to visit Leeds City Council’s website – www.leeds.gov.uk to complete an online application for their child’s secondary school place, before the closing date of 31 October 2014. For those applying online, offers will be emailed on 2 March 2015.

Councillor Judith Blake, executive member responsible for children and families, said:

“Our school admissions team does a huge amount of work every year, for this academic year alone they dealt with over 8000 secondary applications – each one special and important to the family that submitted it.

“To get the best chance of being allocated a preferred school it is very important that families submit their application before the deadline and include five schools they would like their children to attend – in order of preference. We also strongly advise parents to include their nearest school to maximise their chances of getting a local place.

“Deciding which school is best for your child is an important decision and, with so many good schools in Leeds, is not an easy one to make. A lot of work has gone into making the admissions process as straight forward as possible and the online form is quick and easy to fill in.”

The online application process is easy and secure, however people who would prefer to fill in a paper application form, can obtain one from the ‘documents’ section on the admissions pages of the council’s website and return it to: Leeds City Council, PO Box 837, School Admissions, Leeds, LS1 9PZ or hand it in at any school office. Paper copies of the application form are also available from the One Stop Centre at Great George Street or by calling 0113 222 4414 to request one. People who apply using a paper form will be posted their offer by 2nd class post on 2 March 2015. These can take up to a week to arrive.

To help parents and carers make the right decision, the council helps provide the Choice Advice Service - a confidential service which provides impartial advice, guidance and information to families applying for secondary school places for their children. It has lots of useful information about secondary schools in Leeds, including OfSTED reports, league tables, transport and uniform information, and admission policies. They provide impartial advice about all aspects of the admissions process for secondary schools.

To use the service, people can email Choice.advice@leeds.gov.uk or phone 0113 395 1200 for further information.

• It is important to apply by the deadline otherwise the application cannot be processed with those received on time and the child can only be offered one of the remaining spare places.

• It is important to list up to five schools as the child will be considered for every school listed.

• Parents must apply for a school place using the address where their child lives for the majority of the time.
